The Ballahoo was established in 1982, one of the first restaurants catering to
both the local market, and the emerging tourist industry. Many of the staff have
worked at the Ballahoo for more over ten years and witnessed the changing face of
St. Kitts Tourism. During this time the Ballahoo has established a reputation for
consistent quality and value for money and become Basseterre's most popular restaurant.
Initially food supplies were limited, almost entirely, to what was produced locally.
Our menu was therefore based on the creative use of fresh local produce and the adaptation
of classic European recipes to West Indian tastes and ingredients. Our present menu
continues to reflect this emphasis on the use of fresh local seafoods, fruits and
vegetables; while the increased availability of imported foods has allowed us to add
top quality U.S. Steaks to our menu. Our longstanding relationship with farmers
and fisherman in St. Kitts has ensured us of a constant supply of the best ingredients.
Sustainable tourism is the watchword and through sponsorships and buying policies we
promote ecological environmental policies and fisheries conservation. No undersize lobster
or turtle soup here!
Children are welcome for both lunch and dinner, and for those smaller appetites you
are welcome to order snacks at dinnertime. We also have
several vegetarian dishes on our lunch and dinner menu and will try our best to
cater for your special dietary needs.
Art by Rosey Cameron
The walls of the restaurant are adorned with a host of artwork by Rosey Cameron
featuring both her own work and selections from her gallery on Independence Square.
Her 1998 " Ballahoo " has been reproduced as a postcard and is also the basis for our
current T-shirt design.
Visiting Yachts Welcome!
The proprietors Peter and Marian Dupre are both keen yachtsmen and the Ballahoo has
always been a haven for visiting yachts. With even more visiting yachts in Basseterre
and the new marina nearby at Port Zante this trend continues; the restaurant office
monitors VHF 16 and posts a weather report on the notice board. The restaurant also
caters the catamaran trips operated by Leeward Island Charters.
